KUCHICHEB 2014 AND BEYOND: WHAT IS WORTH DOING IS ...Ahmed-Gamgum A. williams
Kuchicheb is usually a one week cultural festival celebrated as from the 25th March of each year by Kuteb people in Takum Chiefdom, Southern Senatorial District of Taraba State Nigeria.
Kuchicheb is usually a one week cultural festival celebrated as from the 25th March of each year by Kuteb people in Takum Chiefdom, Southern Senatorial District of Taraba State Nigeria.
But intergroup politics in Southern Taraba Senatorial District has led
to clashes during the celebration of all cultural festivals in Takum
Chiefdom. And like in the past years, the Kuteb people would not be
celebrating their Kuchicheb festival in 2014 because in 2008 the Taraba
State Government issued a circular letter suspending the celebration of
all cultural festivals in Takum Chiefdom and the ban is still in force.
* The questions now before problem solvers are why has the Kuchicheb, Puje and Takachiyawa cultural festivals tuned to be an avenues to fight, kill and destroy?
* Are there remote causes of the conflict which the Government and people have resolved or failed to resolve?
* What then are the remote and immediate causes of the fighting and killings during the celebration of cultural festivals in Takum?
* Also what are the implications of Government policy of ban on the hosting of all cultural festival in Takum?
* Be that as it may be Ahmed-Gamgum (2014) concludes that the Government has not solved the remote causes.
* If so What happens if the festivals are staged this year without Government approval? If by each ethnic group’s culture (Kuteb inclusive) they have been staging their festival in their traditional headquarter and the Kuteb are not doing so now in Takum what does it amount to?
Indeed opposition to the Kuchicheb cultural festivals in Takum the traditional headquarter of the Kuteb people started in 1976. The action by persons who oppose the staging of Kuchicheb festival in Takum amounts to acts of cultural genocide.
Opposition is not a positive implementation of Nigeria’s Cultural Policy which says Government should promote the culture of all groups in Nigeria. Therefore it is recommended that the Taraba State Government should not be seen to encourage cultural genocide in Taraba State.
As such the remote cause and effects of the conflict should be solved and the ban on the celebration of Kuchicheb be lifted since other ethnic groups are celebrating their cultural festivals in their traditional headquarter.
Read the details and connectiveness of the issues involved in an International Journal to be published in a few weeks from now.
