APC GUBER SPOKE ON HER PLANS FOR FARMER IN TARABA STATE  

 

Taraba is a rural and agrarian state where majority of its people earn their living through farming that relies heavily on rainfall using traditional implements, despite the high potential for commercial production. Agriculture is the main stay of the state’s economy, as it provide livelihood for close to 90 percent of the population.

The state is blessed with large expanses of agricultural land, rivers and flood plains suitable for crops, livestock and fish production. Out of the 2.24 million hectres, total land area of about 1.6 m hectres are estimated to be cultivable during the rainfall season, while about 30,8000hectres of the landmass is cultivable during dry season through irrigation. Based on this, 80 percent of the state’s landmass is considered arable which makes it one of the most agriculturally endowed state in the country.

Unfortunate for farmers, Hoes, cutlasses, out-dated and inefficient tractor were a common sight from all over the state; the sun beat down on their already blackened backs as they toiled to provide food for state, region and the country.

For these subsistent farmers (who were so classified because they could not go beyond manual farming), bush-clearing, tilling (which is the most demanding), planting and harvesting were manually done. Sadly mechanized farming was just the preserved of the few. According to APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Aisha Alhassan, “knowing fully well that agriculture remained the backbone of the state’s economy;“it is my responsibility to make it more attractive to farmers in the state. This can be achieved through adapting spirited approach to mechanized farming.”“If elected, we shall sanitize the state agriculture sector and established more unit of farm mechanization throughout the sixteen local government of the state with a strong investigatory body to ensure effective service delivery”.

Former President Jonathan said during his reception in Bayelsa yesterday that before he became deputy governor of the state, he had no interest in politics. Narrating how he dabbled into politics, Jonathan said, “It all started with me and Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. I knew Alamieyeseigha when he wanted to contest the governorship of Bayelsa State under the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party. That was the first time I knew Alamieyeseigha.
