The woman’s
hair is to be her crown of glory; this is true. Some women are blessed with
long and lustrous hair while others have short and scanty ones. But no matter
how the hair is, it remains the woman’s pride.
African
women are blessed with beautiful hair. That perhaps explains why most African
women make a show of it. This they do by plaiting the hair. Indeed, hair
plaiting is part of African culture. It was a regular feature in the early 50s.
Hair
plaiting is still relevant today. For me it makes a woman natural and beauty
unending. Visit any air saloon and
you’ll be amazed at the beautiful styles hairdressers offer their customers.
These styles
range from fat braids to tiny plaits weaved up or back in different styles. Why
are more women plaiting their hair?
Mama Emmanuela
has this to say: “ I would rather plait the hair than sit under the drier for
hours just to dry my hair”.
For Grace, “
it is quite cheaper to plait the hair. I
spend just 200 naira to plait my hair and I carry my hair for two week compared
with when I retouch and styles my hair which doesn’t even last up to one week.
For Madam
Nde, “The modern ways of hairdo has caused many women their hair. Most of the
hairs treatments today alter the natural way the hair respond to growth. As a
result, many head has gone bald.
Interestingly,
plaiting is now done stylishly. Tiny plait weaved up in place of the pack up
gel style can be just perfect for any social outfit whether corporate or
traditional.
